Opportunity 1
Title:  Southern US States Prepare for Storm Alberto

Description of the story:  Essentially the story is describing how these states are planning to prepare for the subtropical storm that is coming their way.
Description of the problem presented:  The problem presented is the amount of rainfall and damage that could possibly occur over the holiday weekend.  Another problem is also the states of emergencies declared for each state!
Who has the problem:  The citizens of each of the southern states where the storm will hit

Opportunity 2
Title:  Ohio farmers reap frustration over multistate NEXUS pipeline construction

Description of the story:  A NEXUS gas transmission pipeline is being built throughout areas in Ohio and it is hindering farmers abilities to farm.  This is due to the water and erosion damage done to the property
Description of the problem presented:  Farmers are having to redo their soil to fix what the pipeline destroyed
Who has the problem:  Farmers in Ohio affected by the pipeline

Opportunity 3
Title:  How Starbucks will handle Anti-racial bias training

Description of the story:  Starbucks is setting up bias training to combat the issues it had in one of its storefronts.  Two men were arrested in a Philadelphia store due to race issues.  The goal of this training is to eliminate the decisions the workers should have to make in certain circumstances and have a proper protocol in place.
Description of the problem presented:  Starbucks is having to figure out how to approach the training in a politically correct way while also helping the employees
Who has the problem:  Starbucks and its employees

Opportunity 4
Title:  Expanded use of HIV prevention faces stigma, lack of awareness

Description of the story:  Truvada is a drug to prevent the HIV infection from progressing and prevent it from being caught at all.  It is in a class of drugs call PReP which was a saving grace in HIV protection over the years.  Ryan Bandy is an openly gay man who owns 2 bars which are frequented by the LGBTQ community.  His hope is that PReP drugs can become more known and have less of a negative connotation around them.
Description of problem:  PReP drugs including Truvada have bad raps around them
Who has the problem:  Anyone with HIV or who are trying to prevent HIV and taking PReP

Opportunity 5
Title:  School shooting may not bring change to gun-loving Texas

Description of the story:  Even after the Santa Fe shooting in Texas professionals are saying odds are slim that any big change will happen in Texas with regard to gun laws.  Over 1.2 million people are allowed to openly carry guns in the state.  It is a normal thing to have them. 
Description of the problem:  Gun laws are too relaxed which led to an active shooter situation at a school in Texas
Who has the problem:   Anyone in Texas or really anywhere in the world where gun laws are not strict

  1. Hi Rebecca,
    I think you did a great job at selecting a variety of articles, each highlighting something different. I think that shows you how there are several opportunities everywhere. I also really like how you chose topics that are having a big impact, affecting several people. Due to several people having this issue, there is probably a greater need for solutions to these issues. My only suggestion would be to be a little more descriptive and give more detail in each of your responses. I think the more information you have, the better we can understand the true opportunity. Other than that, I really enjoyed your post and think you did a great job.

  2. Hello Rebeca. I like the way that you had this information presented. You took a very different approach that was a lot easier to identify each portion of the assignment compared to the way that I delivered it. I am not sure that you captured the essence of the problem in the last story. The perpetrator in this story took his parents guns which is really a lack of responsible gun ownership. I am not saying that some gun laws are too relaxed, but this was a different case. Responsible gun owners need to be just that, responsible.
