Reading reflection 2/assignment 21A

For this post, I decided to read The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki.

1.  The general theme of the book was essentially how important social media is in this day and age for keeping a business alive and promoting it to the outside world.  Social media is essentially "free" advertising for a business.  By a picture on Instagram or a like or post on Facebook, they are able to get their name out to the public without paying for TV ads, or radio airtime.

2.   The book connected with this class very smoothly.  simply put every assignment we do we are marketing ourselves to someone.  With the elevator pitches, I market myself to the public and my classmates, when we have to go and interview people we are networking and showing our best foot to them so everything we do we are making sure it is appropriate and a good representation of who we are as a brand and a person.

3.  The exercise I would choose to do for the class would be to create something that has all your social media accounts on one screen.  Therefore, it is easy to see and visualize what is happening in one place, at one time.

4.  The thing that surprised me the most about the book was how informed the author truly was about all social media platform.  He was talking about this I hadn't heard of, for example, Google+.  I had no idea that was even a thing let alone a tool to be used.

  1. Hi Rebeca,
I think you did a great job in this post. I really enjoyed your reflection on this book. I agree that social media is super prominent in today's society and that business should take full advantage of that. I also really like your idea for an exercise off of this book. Overall, I think you definitely learned some informative stuff that can help your business be successful.

  2. Hello Rebeca,
You make a good point in identifying how social media can be used as free advertising. It can also be a curse to a business if you fail to follow it. The exercise that you developed is a pretty good real world representation of what is happening out there. When I worked for Ford Motor Company, there was an entire social media division that worked down the hall from me. All they did was monitor social media for anything that was linked to the company.

  3. Hi Rebecca!

Like you, I also read The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki. It was interesting to see your thoughts since we had both looked at the same book for this assignment. I also thought your answer about what exercise you would use in class was a great idea! That is something that would be a helpful and practical assignment for students to complete. Great post!

  4. Hey Rebecca,
Your post about the Art of Social Media mirrored Rebecca Landsea's as well so the author must have had a very clear and useful message. I'm still surprised that Google + was mentioned - Guy must know something we don't. Your in-class exercise would be very neat to play out; we could use a few tools to accomplish it like TweetDeck or something of the like. It's crazy social media is free to do and you can maintain a healthy revenue self promoting. Good post.
